In The Hague, the number of residents of some neighbourhoods with a sense of insecurity grew. The municipality of The Hague is also struggling with heat stress in the summer months and, in addition, much biodiversity is disappearing. To address these problems, the municipality partnered with GAES to measure the performance of urban green space and translate it into optimisation and adaptations of outdoor space.
Pilot redesign Goeverneursplein
A pilot was started on the redesign of Goeverneur Square. The focus in terms of ecosystem services was on reducing heat stress, capturing water, adding biodiversity and regulating the local climate. After this successful pilot, the municipality and GAES continued their cooperation by tackling Oltmansplein. At this location, in addition to climatic ecosystem services, the emphasis came to lie on the social function of greenery. The square is located in a neighbourhood with a multitude of problems.
